Blessed Joachim of Fiore

Although the Church condemned a proposition that Blessed Joachim of Fiore is said to have made concerning the Holy Trinity, it has always held him in esteem.

Numerous miracles are attributed to his intercession. He was an important and highly respected figure among many within the Order of St. Francis, admired for his love of poverty, his interpretations of the Apocalypse, and his prophetic insight into the future rise of both the Dominican and Franciscan Orders.

In 1350, some steps were taken toward his canonization by the General Chapter of his Order. At that time, Pope Clement VI ordered that his miracles be documented. However, the Pope died, and the process was not continued, apparently due to the Great Western Schism.

Joachim of Fiore has been venerated as Blessed and a local cult developed around him, in Calabria, seemingly with at least the tacit approval of the Holy See.

It’s important to remember that he faced intense opposition. His enemies were eager to see him condemned as a heretic. These attacks extended beyond him and were later used as a pretext to persecute certain Friars Minor, including Blessed John of Parma, one of the most exemplary Ministers General the Order of St. Francis ever had.
